30 The Hudson Yards skyscraper in New York City’s Midtown West is one of the tallest freestanding structures in New York.
The structure is part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project, a plan to redevelop the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s West Side Yard, which is located near Hell’s Kitchen, Chelsea and Penn Station and is the city’s sixth-tallest structure.
The Edge, a triangular observation deck on the 100th level with a bar and event space, is known as the building’s signature feature. The world’s highest outdoor observation deck with optically clear flooring and opened in March 2020 at a height of around 1,100 feet.
New York City’s boroughs to the south and east, as well as the state of New Jersey across the Hudson River, can all be seen from this location.

Tips For Visiting The Edge Observation Deck As A First Time Visitor
If you’ve never been to the Edge Observation Deck before, here are a few things you’ll want to know…
You’ll want to avoid coming on a Wednesday, Friday or Sunday as these are the days that the Times Square Alliance has its weekly street performers and it will be very crowded.
You’ll be able to see the performers on the other days, but it will be very crowded. The Times Square Alliance is hosting a reader survey right now, so be sure to stay away from Times Square on those three days.
You’ll want to avoid coming on a Monday. This is when the city closes down Times Square at night. You’ll have to go to one of the other days to see the “no man’s land” of New York City.
If you are coming from out of town, you’ll want to make sure you have lots of time to see the city. The best time of year for this is between late fall and early spring. You’ll have more daylight, and fewer tourists.
How Long Can You Stay On The Edge Observation Desk
You can stay at the Edge for as long as you like but most visitors remain for around 45 to 60 minutes. There is no official time limit on how long you can stay but try to brave the glass floor and look down or if that’s too much of a scary prospect, just relax and take in the breathtaking views of New York City with a glass of whatever you fancy.
Is The Edge NYC Better At Night Or In The Day
For me, you can never go wrong with an iconic New York City skyline photo taken from The Edge at sunset as you’ll be able to see the city in all of its kaleidoscopic glory and come away with some stunning images.
However, being up there during the day is also a fantastic experience especially if it’s bright and sunny with clear skies as you can see New York for miles into the distance. It’s almost like seeing it from a plane flying at low altitude with all of the skyscrapers and traffic below and tiny miniature people scurrying around the streets.
If you visit later at night when it’s dark, you’ll see the city lit up in every direction with lights from buildings, traffic and the huge flashing billboards scattered around especially in Times Square and Broadway. So whatever time of day or night you visit the The Edge Observation Deck, you’ll get an experience that you’ll never forget… and remember to take a camera!!
