In addition to helping communication between contemporary artists and the general public, the New Museum of Contemporary Art acts as a hub for cutting-edge visual art and artistic expression from all over the world, as well as a range of viewpoints and an open forum for debate.
The museums mission as an institution is to encourage artists by collaborating with them to create new works and explore innovative approaches to the creative process and to encourage learning through exploration, question conventional wisdom and disseminate our findings to the world at large.
The New Museum benefits from the contributions of many people and points of view to broaden their horizons and become a welcoming organization.
The founder and current Director Marcia Tucker conceived the idea of the New Museum as she worked as a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art from 1967 to 1976 and saw personally how difficult it was to incorporate the work of contemporary artists into the museum’s established framework for exhibition and acquisition.
Modern artists were not yet receiving the same level of acclaim and respect as those of the past from these distinguished establishments so Tucker envisioned a place that would display, research and interpret contemporary art, applying the intellectual methods of these more established institutions to the work of younger artists.
On January 1, 1977, Tucker opened the New Museum as the first museum in New York City to focus exclusively on modern art since the end of World War II and making it an institution that aims to bridge the gap between traditional museums and alternative spaces by functioning as “an exhibition, information and documentation center for contemporary art.”
The museum also exposed the public to the work of contemporary artists who had not yet achieved widespread recognition or critical acclaim in their field.
During the weekend of December 2–3, the New Museum celebrates its yearly anniversary with free entry, extended hours and a series of public conversations with artists whose exhibitions, works and interventions have had a significant impact on the museum’s development and identity from it’s early beginnings.
