Poster House Museum New York City

Poster House is a museum that showcases the significance, history and culture of posters, both as artefacts from the past and as tools for modern visual communication.

The museum is dedicated to the study of posters, their great cultural significance and the ways in which they have been adapted for modern use through a series of temporary exhibitions, a growing permanent collection and educational programs.

Poster House finally opened its doors in 2019, after years of planning and building and is the first museum dedicated solely to posters in the United States and its mission is to increase public awareness and understanding of design since it was established in 2015 with the goal of filling a void in New York’s cultural scene regarding affordable and easily accessible art.

The New York State Council on the Arts has been a great partner for Poster House and the nearly 15,000 square foot, two-story space in which they reside in Chelsea, New York City on 23rd Street between and Sixth Avenue and Seventh Avenue, was renovated in 2018.

The building design takes into account that posters are meant to be shown on the street and employs the length of the space to imply a sidewalk while utilizing a variety of industrial materials.

The design makes use of the building’s original brick walls, barrel vaults and cast-iron columns to pay homage to the building’s old heritage and features engage in conversation with the modern architecture, fusing the traditional with the cutting-edge and embodying an appreciation for the poster’s dual role as a medium of commercial and artistic expression.

In 2015, Val Crosswhite rallied the support necessary to establish Poster House and bring attention to the artistic value and social significance of posters, which were being ignored by existing organizations and to prepare the old home of Apple specialized company TekServe for museum usage.
